Violence in Western China Leaves 20 Dead - Islam Suspected

An outburst of violence in a remote desert region of western China has underscored tensions over Chinese rule in ethnic-minority areas just days before an important national policy meeting here in Beijing. About 20 people were reported killed on Tuesday night in clashes in Xinjiang province in China’s far west.

“We’re still dealing with a lot of distressed properties and very low absolute levels of demand,” said Sean Incremona, a senior economist at 4Cast Inc. in New York, who accurately projected the 4 percent drop. “We’re not seeing any of the stabilization in housing activity filter through to prices.” 

A separate report today from the Commerce Department showed orders for U.S. durable goods fell in January by the most in three years, led by a slowdown in demand for commercial aircraft and business equipment. 

.. Bookings for goods meant to last at least three years slumped 4 percent, more than forecast, after a revised 3.2 percent gain the prior month. Economists projected a 1 percent decline, according to the median forecast in a Bloomberg News survey.

US Navy Tests Supersonic Electromagnetic Gun

The US Navy is developing an electrically powered rail gun capable of firing missiles between 50 to 100 nautical miles at seven times the speed of sound. 

 

The 40ft (12.19m) long gun that shoots rounds at several times the speed of sound — is being developed for US Navy warships whose current 5in (12.7cm) guns have a range of about 15 miles (24km).

Known as an electromagnetic rail gun, the weapon consists of parallel rails and uses a magnetic field and electric current, instead of chemicals, to generate the energy required to fire the rounds.

The US Navy revealed a private sector built prototype is being tested at the Naval Surface Warfare Centre Dahlgren Division in northern Virginia, who released a short video showcasing the weapon's incredible power.

Scientists are currently focused on measuring the life-expectancy of the gun's barrel and its structural integrity given its capability of firing rounds at up to 5,600 miles per hour (9,010kph), or more than seven times the speed of sound.

It is estimated that five more years of research may be required to develop cooling systems that will allows the gun to cope with being fired repetitively. According to the Navy officials the desire is for the super-gun to fire ten rounds a minute and shoot missiles up to an astonishing 220 nautical miles.

An Arabic couple in Jerusalem's Shuafat neighborhood who kept a Filipina hostage:

The Jerusalem District Court made history Wednesday when it convicted Ibrahim and Basma Joulani for holding a young woman in conditions constituting slavery. There have been no previous convictions for the crime in Israel.

The court found that the couple held a young woman from the Philippines in their home in the Arab neighborhood of Shuafat in Jerusalem for one year and ten months, and forced her to work for them. In addition, they took her passport from her.

If there was one case of this sort discovered among Muslims in Israel, there could be others taking place around here as well. The problem isn't likely to be over.

Iran and Lebanon talked up their defence ties and warned Israel against any aggression, during a visit to Tehran on Sunday by Lebanese Defence Minister Fayez Ghosn.

UK: children's cartoon creator detained and branded racist for innocent scarf joke at airport security

The creator of the popular children’s character Fireman Sam has told how he was accused of racism after making a light-hearted remark at Gatwick airport. 

Dave Jones said he experienced an ‘Orwellian nightmare’ after commenting on the ease with which a woman with her face covered by a hijab, another form of the burqa, had walked through security controls. 

As he placed his scarf and other items into a tray to pass through an X-ray scanner, he quipped to an official: ‘If I was wearing this scarf over my face, I wonder what would happen.’ 

To his astonishment, he was met on the other side of the barrier by officials who detained him for an hour in an attempt to force him to apologise and the police were called. 

Mr Jones, 67, who was supposed to be meeting his daughters, said: ‘Something like George Orwell’s 1984 now seems to have arrived  in Gatwick airport.

‘I feel my rights as an individual have been violated. 

‘What I underwent amounts to intimidation, unlawful arrest and detention. I was humiliated and denigrated in full public view.

Mr Jones, a former member of the Household Cavalry and a retired fireman, said he had said nothing racist. But she took his passport and boarding pass and escorted him to another area where she questioned him. 

He said: ‘It was impossible to get her to listen to reason. We were then joined by a second female security guard who stated that she was Muslim and was deeply distressed by my comment.

‘I again stated that I had not made a racist remark but purely an observation that we were in a maximum security situation being searched thoroughly while a woman with her face covered walked through.

‘I made no reference to race or religion. I did not swear or raise my voice.’
After about 20 minutes, he asked the security guard whether he was going to be charged. She said no, but he could not leave until he apologised. 

He called for a policeman but, he said, it was clear the officer was ‘keeping to the politically correct code’.

Egyptian voters who backed the Brotherhood — giving it 235 seats, 47 percent of those in parliament — will vote for someone. The Brotherhood doesn’t own their votes, but presumably most of these voters will support an unofficial Brotherhood candidate.

The Salafists, with 121 seats — almost 25 percent of parliament — will probably have their own candidate.

While this seemed impossible last year, it is now conceivable: the two leading presidential candidates will be Islamists, and thus Egypt will have an Islamist president.

In other words, it's a lose-lose situation no matter how you cut it. That Mr. Romney would traverse Michigan trashing a program that saved tens of thousands of jobs at the Detroit-based automakers doesn’t necessarily mean he’s politically tone-deaf. 

After all, an NBC/Marist poll recently found that 50 percent of Michigan Republicans who were likely to vote opposed the government’s actions (only 42 percent supported them). 

Mr. Romney may have the primary politics right — though with a majority of Michigan voters supporting the rescue, he may want to pivot deftly before the general election in November. But on the substance he’s dead wrong.

Andrew Cuomo wrapped up his four years as attorney general Thursday by cutting a deal with Manhattan moneyman Steven Rattner over the pay-to-play pension fund scandal. 

Rattner agreed to pay the state $10 million for his role in the scam during disgraced ex-Controller Alan Hevesi's tenure. 

Rattner also agreed to a five-year ban from doing any work with pension funds in New York. [...]  

Rattner, President Obama's former car czar and a popular Democratic fund-raiser, had been openly feuding with Cuomo and his office.

Rattner, who had publicly blasted Cuomo's investigation as politically motivated, was more contrite in a released statement.

"I apologize if during the course of this process there is anything I did that may have made reaching this agreement more difficult," he said. "I respect the work of the attorney general and his staff."

The settlement, he added, "allows me to put this matter behind me."

The Daily News first reported last year the ties of Rattner and his now former firm, Quadrangle, to the widespread corruption scandal hatched under Hevesi.

Quadrangle won $150 million in pension business in 2005 with the help of Hank Morris, a top Hevesi adviser.

Quadrangle said Rattner hired Morris, who collected $1 million in kickbacks, but did little work.

In the middle of the investment decision-making process, Cuomo said Rattner arranged a DVD distribution deal for the movie "Chooch," produced by the brother of Hevesi's chief investment officer.

Hevesi and Morris have pleaded guilty to to pocketing kickbacks and both face up to four years in the slammer.
